Suicide has become an epidemic within the United States, with the CDC  ranking it among the top 9 leading causes of death throughout the country. A lack of treatment options and low access to mental health services have created an alarming increase in suicide rates over the past decade.

While suicide has touched the lives of many Americans, it can be prevented with proper care. In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, Serenity Mental Health Centers is taking action to raise aw areness while providing advanced treatment for those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts.

The Rise of Suicide Rates

Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, regardless of their age or gender. In fact, a 2020 study from SAVE  found that every day, approximately 125 Americans die by suicide. More recently, Mental Health America’s national 2022 Prevalence of Mental Illness study , an estimated 11.4 million American adults struggle with serious suicidal thoughts, representing an increase of 664,000 people from 2021’s data set. For those who have lived with suicidal thoughts in silence, increased access to state-of-the-art mental health treatments can prevent a crisis situation.

Mental Health Treatments for Suicide Prevention

Though suicide may seem like the only option to someone who is experiencing the mental and emotional impact of suicidal thoughts, hope can be found with a strong support system and advanced mental health treatment options such as those found at Serenity.

TMS Therapy

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective treatment for sui cidal ideation. Using magnetic pulses, TMS helps to develop new neural pathways for the brain to overcome the negative effects of major depression.

TMS is a successful response to suicide prevention thanks to its long-lasting effects and high response rate. In a study from Standford University , researchers found a significant reduction in reported symptoms from 62.5% of study participants over an extended follow-up period. Studies using BrainsWay’s Deep TMS system  also show that patients who receive six weeks of TMS treatment (30 sessions) report a 75% positive response rate and a 51% remission rate.

Ketamine Treatment

Ketamine treatment is a highly effec tive option for patients struggling with overwhelming depression or thoughts of self-harm. It can provide immediate symptom relief, with about 85% of patients at Serenity experiencing substantial improvement of symptoms after ketamine treatment and many patients reporting relief within 24 hours of their first treatment. For patients in immediate danger of suicide, ketamine can help to reduce feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts long enough to receive care and create a long-term treatment plan.
