TMS Therapy Q&A

What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a noninvasive, drug-free treatment for mental health conditions and symptoms. It works by stimulating specific areas of the brain to alleviate symptoms.

TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses similar to an MRI to stimulate brain function. These pulses activate nerve cells in your brain, creating new neural pathways that change how your brain sends and receives messages.

Am I a candidate for TMS therapy?

The Serenity Mental Health Centers team determines if you’re a candidate for TMS therapy after a consultation. The innovative psychiatric practice offers TMS therapy as a treatment option for many mental health conditions, including:

  • Depression

  • Major depressive disorder

  • Anxiety

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Bipolar disorder

However, TMS therapy is only FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and OCD. Therefore, off-label use of TMS therapy to treat other mental health conditions may not be covered by your health insurance.

How does TMS therapy work?

TMS therapy works by stimulating the tired nerve cells in your brain.

These nerve cells carry chemicals — serotonin and dopamine — that affect your mood. However, when your nerve cells are tired, they may not send or receive these feel-good chemicals, leading to your depressed mood.

TMS therapy stimulates these tired nerve cells, increasing activity and improving the delivery of those mood-enhancing chemicals, so you feel better.

Many patients at Serenity Mental Health Centers report a significant improvement in their symptoms following TMS therapy, and many even go into total remission.

What can I expect during TMS therapy?

TMS therapy is a painless outpatient procedure the Serenity Mental Health Centers team performs at the office. During your session, your provider places a helmet with a magnetic coil over your head. The helmet then delivers the magnetic pulses to your brain to stimulate neural activity.

You may experience a tapping sensation as the pulses hit your scalp, but no pain or discomfort.

When treating mental health conditions like major depressive disorder or OCD, the Serenity Mental Health Centers team recommends five TMS therapy sessions a week for up to six weeks. Each session takes 20-30 minutes.

There’s no downtime following TMS therapy, and you can drive or go back to work after your session.
