About Tara Leedham, PMHNP

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

From corrections nursing to the operating room to the emergency department, Tara Leedham, MSN, CEN, PMHNP-BC’s, career has been shaped by a desire to connect with people and address the root causes of their struggles, not just the symptoms on the surface.

Education and Background

Tara began her nursing career in corrections, where she was first exposed to the profound impact of untreated mental illness and substance use disorders. After five years, she transitioned to the operating room and then to the emergency department, where she worked with diverse populations and saw firsthand how deeply emotional and mental well-being affect every aspect of a person’s health. Those experiences solidified her decision to pursue psychiatric care.

She earned her Master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University, where she trained across a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient, pediatric, and substance use treatment. Originally from Cottonwood, Arizona, Tara was drawn to Serenity because of its focus on offering a broader range of interventions beyond medication management alone, aligning with her philosophy of treating the whole person.

Care Philosophy

Tara’s approach to care is rooted in meeting patients where they are and building a collaborative, trusting relationship. She believes that mental health conditions are medical conditions, just like any other, and she is committed to helping reduce the stigma that too often prevents people from seeking help. She uses evidence-based practices, motivational interviewing, and a strong emphasis on patient education to ensure that every person she works with understands their symptoms and feels empowered to take an active role in their care.

She prioritizes creating a space where patients feel safe, respected, and truly listened to. Tara takes the time to actively listen, ask thoughtful questions, and reflect back what she’s hearing so that every patient feels validated and confident that their voice matters in their care. Her goal is not just symptom management, but genuine support, understanding, and long-term well-being.

Personal Interests

Outside of the clinic, Tara enjoys spending time with her family, especially during the summer months. She loves being outdoors, whether she’s swimming, visiting rivers and lakes, or paddleboarding. She’s an avid reader across a wide range of genres, a true crime enthusiast, and a strong believer in the connection between physical fitness and overall mental health. She is also actively involved in education, youth sports, and her local church.

What to Expect

During your first session with Tara, which typically lasts about an hour, she’ll take the time to get to know you as a whole person. Together, you’ll discuss your history, symptoms, daily life, and what may be contributing to your current concerns. She’ll explain how diagnoses are made in a clear, understandable way, and you’ll begin building goals and a treatment plan together. Tara wants every patient to know that her office is a safe, supportive space where they can be open and understood, without judgment.
