Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
After first pursuing a creative career in theater, film, and comedy improv, Ryan Wandler, DNP, PMHNP-BC, followed a deeper calling into healthcare, building a practice rooted in integrative psychiatry to find real, lasting solutions for his patients.
Education and Background
Before entering nursing, he spent three years working as a light and sound designer in theater and film, with comedy improv on the side. When he decided he wanted to help people in a more tangible way, he went back to school and found himself drawn to psychiatry again and again. The seeds had been planted long before, growing up with a father who was a psychiatrist and a household where mental health was discussed openly around the dinner table.
After his time in the entertainment industry, Ryan earned his Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and went on to complete his Doctor of Nursing Practice. He has worked across a variety of clinical settings, but kept finding his way back to psychiatry, a field that felt like the natural fit for the curiosity, empathy, and understanding of human nature he’d been building his entire life. Born and raised in Arizona, Ryan is proud to serve the community he’s always called home.
Care Philosophy
Ryan has studied integrative psychiatry extensively, and his approach reflects that commitment. He believes strongly in looking beyond symptoms to identify root causes, often starting with comprehensive bloodwork panels to understand what may be driving a patient’s mental health concerns at a biological level. His treatment philosophy goes well beyond medication alone, incorporating vitamins, herbal supplements, mindfulness, behavioral changes, and TMS therapy, which he has found to be one of the most effective tools for his patients.
While Ryan does prescribe medication when it’s the right fit, he is focused on finding solutions that create long-term benefits. He takes the time to understand the full picture of each patient’s life, including their work, relationships, hobbies, diet, and exercise, and builds a plan that addresses their struggles in a comprehensive, personalized way.
Personal Interests
Ryan’s background in theater and improv comedy gives him a creative energy and natural ability to connect with people that his patients notice right away. He loves the Desert Ridge area for its great shopping, dining, and proximity to the Musical Instrument Museum. That blend of creativity, curiosity, and warmth is something he brings to every patient interaction.
What to Expect
In your first session with Ryan, he’ll work to get a whole picture of your life before jumping to any conclusions or prescriptions. Together, you’ll discuss what you’re struggling with and begin building a plan that addresses those struggles in a way that makes sense for you. Patients can expect a provider who is thorough, creative in his approach, and genuinely focused on finding solutions that last.
