Nico Bohm is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who brings warmth, empathy, and a collaborative spirit to mental healthcare. Originally from Nebraska, Nico relocated to Colorado with his wife, a Colorado native he met at the University of Nebraska, and has embraced life in the Denver metro area, where he now calls Highlands Ranch home.
Nico’s path into mental health began during nursing school, where a psychiatric rotation sparked an immediate connection. To solidify his direction, he completed an extensive capstone in mental health, confirming what he already suspected: this was his calling.
Right out of nursing school, Nico dove into inpatient psychiatry at a stand-alone facility, where he worked for about a year and a half. He then spent five years at Children’s Hospital Colorado, deepening his clinical expertise while completing his master’s degree at Walden University. After transitioning to outpatient care at another Denver clinic for over two years, Nico joined Serenity Mental Health Centers in October 2023.
Nico comes from a healthcare family. His mother is a retired nurse, and his sister is also a nurse practitioner. Growing up surrounded by caregivers instilled in him a natural understanding of what it means to support others during vulnerable moments.
Having worked in inpatient psychiatry where patients often felt stuck, Nico deeply appreciates the outpatient setting where patients come in with at least some desire to work on their mental health. He takes that motivation and runs with it, building on their readiness to create meaningful change.
What sets Nico apart is his genuine enjoyment of working with people across the lifespan and across all backgrounds. He works comfortably with patients across the full spectrum of adulthood, from young adults to seniors, and across all gender identities. This versatility allows him to connect authentically with the diverse groups of people who come through Serenity’s doors.
Collaboration is at the heart of Nico’s practice. He doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions.
Instead, he takes time to understand each patient’s unique history: what medications they’ve tried, what therapies they’ve explored, and what has or hasn’t worked. He likes to think out loud with patients, exploring different treatment options together and ensuring they feel like active participants in the process rather than simply receiving orders.
Nico is particularly passionate about Serenity’s diverse treatment offerings, including TMS and ketamine therapy. He finds it deeply rewarding to educate patients about treatments like TMS, helping them understand what these innovative approaches can bring to the table and how they can provide new hope for recovery.
Outside the clinic, Nico is a devoted family man with two young children. He and his wife stay busy with family activities and the everyday adventures of raising young kids.
Nico is an avid sports fan, supporting all the Colorado teams while staying loyal to his Nebraska roots for college football. He enjoys skiing, though he’s had less time on the slopes since becoming a father. In his spare time, Nico pursues woodworking as a creative outlet.
Living in Highlands Ranch, just 20 minutes south of the Cherry Creek clinic, Nico appreciates the Denver area’s consistent sunshine and diverse seasons, which provide a great environment for both work and family life.
Nico’s greatest hope is that every patient feels heard, valued, and empowered. “My job is to educate you on what I think might be helpful and why I think it might be helpful,” he explains. “And then we come up with a plan that you feel comfortable with, because if you feel comfortable, then you’re more likely to have success.”
He encourages open communication and makes it clear that his support extends beyond the appointment. In every session, Nico listens actively, tailors treatment to the individual, and remains flexible. “If they feel like it’s not working, we change our treatment plan,” he says simply. His guiding principles of empathy, attentiveness, caring, and a willingness to adapt ensure that patients never feel like just another number, but rather like partners in their own healing journey.
