Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
With a background that spans emergency nursing, family practice, and psychiatric mental health care, Kristin Manning, PMHNP, brings a thorough and unhurried approach to every patient she sees. Her path into mental health began in the emergency department, where she saw how often a person's mental health went unaddressed, and it took hold during a behavioral health rotation in her nurse practitioner program. She's worked exclusively in mental health care ever since.
Education and Background
Kristin earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Indianapolis and later returned for a dual master's in nursing and business administration alongside her Family Nurse Practitioner degree. She went on to complete her Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification at the University of Cincinnati, and she is board certified in both family practice and psychiatric mental health.
Her years in emergency nursing shape how she works today. She saw how much of a person's mental health goes unexamined in an emergency setting, and she treats a full history, including family psychiatric history, as the place to start rather than a formality.
Care Philosophy
Kristin believes that improving someone's mental health means looking at every part of their life, and that this takes time. Time to understand who you are when you first walk in, and time to understand where you've been. She meets you where you are and works alongside you from there.
She's also committed to raising awareness of mental health conditions and breaking the stigma that follows them. As she puts it, just because you can't physically see what's causing a mental health condition doesn't mean it isn't there. In her view mental and physical health are inseparable, and her clinical background lets her work closely with other providers so that both are treated as connected rather than separate.
Personal Interests
Kristin and her husband vacationed in Sanibel for years and decided that with their children grown, it was time to make Florida home. Family already living nearby settled it. Between the two of them she and her husband have eight children and eleven grandchildren, and leaving them was the hardest part of the move.
Florida suits her. She spends as much time outdoors as she can, working in the yard and exercising, and after years of crafting she recently joined a pottery club. Her youngest daughter lives with her and her husband, along with two dogs, Coco and a micro Bernedoodle named Eleanor.
What to Expect
In sessions with Kristin, patients can expect a provider who asks a lot of questions and leaves room for you to answer them. She wants to know how your mental health has affected your life so far and how you want your life to look once things improve, and she works to make the room feel safe enough to be honest in.
She welcomes questions back, and before you leave you'll know the plan: what the treatment is, what any medication is for, and when you're coming back. Kristin treats care as a partnership and describes mental wellness as a journey rather than a destination, something you tend to a little at a time. Respect, kindness, encouragement, and patience guide how she works.
