Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
As an immigrant from a small town in Vietnam, Kendra Nugyen, PMHNP, saw firsthand the struggles of those with mental illness who lacked support and treatment options. Those early experiences instilled in her a desire to bridge the gaps in mental health services and bring a holistic, compassionate approach to psychiatric care.
Education and background
Kendra earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Sam Houston State University and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, specializing in mental health. Before transitioning to psychiatric care, she spent five years in critical care settings, from trauma to cardiovascular units, where she developed a deep understanding of patient needs in high-stakes environments.
Her doctoral thesis focused on the early identification of suicidal ideation in college students, and through her research she achieved significant improvements in mental health outcomes on campus. That work reinforced her belief in the power of proactive, preventive care and continues to shape the way she approaches every patient interaction.
Care philosophy
Kendra’s philosophy centers on recognizing that every patient is someone’s loved one. She approaches each individual with empathy, respect, and a genuine dedication to their well-being. She values open communication and works alongside her patients to create personalized care plans that honor their unique needs and circumstances.
Believing strongly in the mind-body connection, Kendra integrates both mental and physical health perspectives to help her patients achieve a sense of wholeness and healing. Her background in critical care gives her a unique ability to see the full picture of a patient’s health, and she draws on that foundation to provide care that is thorough, compassionate, and truly holistic.
Personal interests
Outside of the clinic, Kendra finds joy and relaxation in nature, often hiking or practicing yoga to stay balanced. She shares her life with two beloved cats, Munchkin and Tofu, who keep her company and brighten her days. That sense of balance and warmth is something her patients feel in every visit.
What to expect
In sessions with Kendra, patients can expect a provider who brings both deep clinical expertise and heartfelt compassion to every conversation. She creates a space where you can feel supported, empowered, and heard, and she is committed to building a care plan that reflects your individual journey.
