About Ekuevugbe 'Ekus' Onosode, PMHNP

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Before entering psychiatric care, Ekus Onosode, DNP, PMHNP-BC, spent eight years as a registered nurse on a neurotrauma unit, where she cared for patients whose lives were suddenly changed by brain injuries. It was there, supporting patients and their families through uncertainty, grief, and adjustment, that she saw just how closely mental health is tied to physical recovery. Those experiences inspired her to pursue her Nurse Practitioner degree and Doctorate so she could support the full scope of a patient’s healing.

Education and Background

Ekus began her career as a registered nurse, spending eight years in a neurotrauma unit where she developed a deep appreciation for the complexity of the brain and the connection between physical and mental health. That experience led her to return to school for her Nurse Practitioner degree and ultimately her Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Originally from Michigan, she relocated to Arizona where she has embraced the community’s culture of balancing work, personal life, and wellness.

Care Philosophy

Ekus’s work is guided by empathy, respect, and collaboration. She believes each person is the expert in their own life, and her role is to support and guide rather than direct. She focuses on active listening, reflecting back what she hears, and asking thoughtful questions to truly understand each patient’s perspective. She values evidence-based care while tailoring her approach to fit each individual’s needs, culture, and goals.

She brings a calm, empathetic, and nonjudgmental presence to her work, drawing on her neurotrauma background and her own life experiences to meet patients where they are. She understands the importance of relationships and support systems in a person’s life, and she creates a space where every patient feels genuinely heard, respected, and supported.

Personal Interests

Outside of the clinic, Ekus enjoys spending time outdoors, staying active, hiking, and exploring new places and local spots. She also values quiet time to recharge, whether that’s reading, listening to music, or connecting with friends and family. She volunteers at her church and is committed to supporting her community beyond her clinical work.

What to Expect

In your first session with Ekus, the focus is on getting to know you and understanding what brought you in. There’s no pressure to share everything all at once. She wants you to feel comfortable going at your own pace, and her goal is to create a supportive, judgment-free space from the very beginning. The most important thing Ekus wants her patients to know is that you don’t have to have everything figured out to begin. Just showing up is a meaningful first step, and she’s here to walk the rest of the way with you.
