Psychiatrist
Dr. Muhammad Atif Akhtar,MD’s, interest in psychiatry began during research with individuals living with multiple sclerosis, where he witnessed firsthand how depression and emotional pain can be just as debilitating as physical illness. That experience deepened his commitment to supporting patients through both visible and invisible challenges, and it continues to shape the compassionate, personalized care he provides today.
Education and background
Dr. Akhtar earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, and completed both his psychiatry residency and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Texas–Houston. His dual training equips him to treat patients across the full lifespan, from young children to adults, with the kind of specialized expertise that comes from dedicated fellowship training in younger populations.
Care philosophy
Dr. Akhtar provides personalized, evidence-based care for a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, and more. His approach is rooted in understanding each patient as an individual, taking the time to listen to their concerns, and building a treatment plan that reflects their unique needs and goals.
His early research into the connection between physical and mental health gave him a perspective that few providers carry into their practice, a deep awareness that what patients are experiencing emotionally is just as real and deserving of expert care as any physical condition. He brings that understanding to every visit, whether he’s working with a child, a teenager, or an adult.
Personal interests
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Akhtar enjoys watching football and cricket, and taking road trips across North America with his family. That love of exploration and time spent with the people who matter most keeps him grounded and brings fresh energy to the care he provides every day.
What to expect
In sessions with Dr. Akhtar, patients and families can expect a provider who is thoughtful, compassionate, and genuinely committed to their well-being. He creates a welcoming space where you can share openly and feel confident that your care plan is built around your individual needs, whether you’re seeking support for yourself or your child.
