Psychiatrist
Known for his calm, non-judgmental presence, Dr. Martin Hinrichs, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who helps patients feel comfortable talking about the things that are hardest to say. Patients have told him many times that his calming presence makes it easier to open up, and that steadiness is at the center of how he practices.
Education and Background
Dr. Hinrichs earned his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma, then completed his psychiatry residency and a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is board certified in both psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.
His path into mental health care started close to home. He grew up around several people who lived with mental health and substance use challenges, and he always felt for them. A personal loss at the start of college led him to change his career plans and focus on helping people through these struggles.
Care Philosophy
Acceptance and a non-judgmental approach guide every interaction Dr. Hinrichs has with patients. He balances genuine empathy for what you're going through with a calm, steady presence in the moment. He believes people can tell when someone is truly interested in what they have to say, so he asks questions until he's sure he understands where you're coming from. When medication is part of the plan, he's mindful of side effects and cost, and he looks for a regimen that offers as much benefit as possible with as few medications as possible. To him, mental health care is a collaborative process, and you're an active partner in it.
Personal Interests
Dr. Hinrichs loves Denver for its weather, its closeness to the mountains, and its hiking trails. He's a big fan of live music, and he and his wife make it to at least one show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre every year, always making the effort when an artist they love comes through. He's an animal lover with two cats and two dogs at home, and he enjoys tabletop gaming when he can find the time.
What to Expect
In sessions with Dr. Hinrichs, patients can expect a chance to talk through what brought them in, along with plenty of questions to understand anything else that may be affecting how they feel or get through the day. If you feel ready, he aims to talk through treatment options and get started at your first appointment. He's easy to work with, and you can count on him to treat you with care and respect at every visit.
