Dr. Andrew Norman, MD

Psychiatrist

About Dr. Andrew Norman, MD

Dr. Andrew Norman is a board-certified psychiatrist who brings warmth, experience, and a collaborative spirit to mental healthcare. Originally from Searcy, Arkansas, Dr. Norman has built his career serving both military and civilian communities. After completing his Air Force service, he returned to San Antonio, a city he first came to love during his residency training, drawn back by both the opportunity to join Serenity and the vibrant community he calls home.

Education and Background

Dr. Norman earned his medical degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma, graduating in 2014. He initially entered medical school with his sights set firmly on emergency medicine, having worked in an ER for several years before pursuing his degree. Everything changed during his third year of medical school when he completed a rotation at an outpatient psychiatry clinic through the VA in Tulsa.

What he expected to be a relatively light month turned into a revelation. He found himself captivated by patients’ stories, their mental health journeys, and the profound impact a skilled psychiatrist could have on their lives through thoughtful treatment and medication management. He fell in love with the field and knew this was his calling. Dr. Norman completed his psychiatry residency training in San Antonio from 2015 to 2019, then fulfilled his commitment to the Air Force, serving at various stations over four years before returning to San Antonio to join Serenity.

His military background continues to inform his practice. Having served in the Air Force, he brings unique insight when working with veterans and active-duty service members, though he finds these experiences translate meaningfully to civilian care as well. His journey from emergency medicine to psychiatry reflects his deep appreciation for the power of prevention and the life-changing potential of mental health treatment.

Care Philosophy

Dr. Norman’s approach begins by creating a sense of comfort and safety. He recognizes that walking through the door for a first appointment takes courage. His goal is to acknowledge this difficulty while helping patients feel at ease in a peaceful, calming environment designed to reduce anxiety from the moment they arrive.

Listening forms the foundation of Dr. Norman’s practice. He invites patients to share their experiences in their own words, exploring what brought them in and what circumstances led them to seek help. He takes time to understand their life story and background, believing that context matters deeply in mental health care.

Collaboration guides every treatment decision. Dr. Norman presents options he believes will be beneficial while thoroughly explaining both the potential benefits and risks. He shares information openly, helping patients understand treatments like TMS by drawing on real examples from his own clinical experience. He views treatment as a shared journey, with himself as a guide walking alongside patients rather than dictating their path.

His philosophy is grounded in hope and possibility. Dr. Norman genuinely believes in the treatments Serenity offers and has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact they can have. He works to convey this hope to patients, helping them see that there are real, effective options available to help them reclaim their lives.

Personal Interests

Outside the clinic, Dr. Norman is devoted to his family. He and his wife have four children who keep their lives full and joyful. Family time is sacred in the Norman household, with intentional traditions that anchor their weeks.

On the weekends when they’re free from other commitments, the family gathers for game or movie nights. These consistent rituals create space for connection and fun amidst busy schedules.

Dr. Norman is an enthusiastic reader, though he admits time is limited with four kids. He’s adapted by embracing audiobooks, allowing him to continue enjoying literature while managing family and professional responsibilities. He’s also a passionate sports fan who played sports throughout his youth. As a proud Arkansas native, he’s a devoted Razorbacks fan and loves college football season.

What to Expect

Dr. Norman’s greatest hope is that patients feel truly heard and supported from their very first visit. He understands that opening up about mental health struggles is vulnerable work, and he approaches each conversation with respect for the courage it takes to be present.

Patients can expect a provider who listens more than he talks, who values their input in treatment decisions, and who genuinely believes in their capacity for healing. Dr. Norman brings both clinical expertise and real hope, grounded in the positive outcomes he’s witnessed throughout his career. His collaborative approach ensures that treatment plans reflect not just clinical best practices, but also each patient’s unique needs, concerns, and goals.
