About Akuteh 'Joy' Achang, PMHNP

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

During five years as an oncology nurse, Joy Achang, DNP, PMHNP-BC frequently witnessed patients struggling emotionally while receiving limited attention to their mental health needs. She saw firsthand how patients often did better physically when their emotional and mental well-being were also addressed. Those experiences reinforced her belief that mental health is an essential part of overall health and inspired her to pursue psychiatric care so she could help patients feel supported, understood, and empowered throughout their journey.

Education and background

Joy's path into mental health was shaped by her years caring for oncology patients and their families, where she learned the importance of treating the whole person, not just an illness or diagnosis. She continued her education at the University of Arizona, where she completed her training as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). During her residency, she worked with a diverse patient population, which strengthened her understanding of the importance of individualized, culturally sensitive, and compassionate care. Growing up watching her mom raise three kids as a single parent taught Joy to be empathetic, nonjudgmental, and always ready to lend a helping hand, qualities that carry through in everything she does as a provider.

Care philosophy

Joy's approach is guided by compassion, respect, empathy, collaboration, and individualized care. She believes mental health treatment should be a true partnership between patient and provider. She uses evidence-based practices while considering each person's unique experiences, values, culture, preferences, and goals. Being a mom herself has also strengthened her ability to be patient, understanding, and present for others.

Personal interests

Joy has made Arizona home and loves the environment the state provides for staying active and creative. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, baking, crocheting, and working on DIY projects. She believes that finding joy and balance in everyday life is an important part of overall well-being.

What to expect

Patients can expect a warm, welcoming, and nonjudgmental environment from their very first visit. Joy takes the time to understand your concerns, your history, your goals, and what matters most to you. She listens with empathy, asks thoughtful questions, and works collaboratively with you to develop a treatment approach that fits your individual needs. Most importantly, she wants you to know that you don't have to go through your mental health journey alone, and that seeking help is a sign of strength.
