OCD Q&A

What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a long-term mental health condition that causes obsessive thoughts and urges or compulsive, repetitive behaviors. People with OCD struggle to control these thoughts or behaviors, which significantly affects their quality of life.

What are the symptoms of OCD?

OCD symptoms may include obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, or both.

Obsessive thoughts

People with obsessive thoughts have recurring urges, mental images, or ideas that cause anxiety. Fear of germs and the need for things to be in perfect order are examples of obsessive thoughts.

Compulsive behaviors

With compulsive behaviors, you have an intense urge to behave in a certain way to relieve the anxiety from your obsessive thought — for example, frequent hand washing or continuously rearranging items to put them in perfect order.

It’s not unusual to want to wash your hands or arrange your cups in a specific way. However, with OCD, the thoughts and related behaviors are excessive and tend to cause problems in other areas of their life.

If you struggle managing your OCD symptoms or think you may have OCD, request an appointment with the experienced team at Serenity Mental Health Centers to get the help you need.

How is OCD treated?

The Serenity Mental Health Centers team takes an individualized approach to care and customizes treatment plans based on diagnosis, the severity of symptoms, mental health history, and personal needs.

Initially, the team may recommend talk therapy, medication management, and exposure response prevention (ERP) therapy, which teaches you how to face obsessive thoughts without compulsive behavior.

However, no single treatment or medication works for all with OCD. For those not finding relief with medication management or experiencing side effects that affect their quality of life, the team offers:

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy

TMS therapy is a noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment for OCD.

During therapy, TMS sends magnetic pulses to the areas of your brain associated with your obsessive thoughts and behaviors. The magnetic pulses stimulate the nerve cells in this area and reduce or eliminate OCD symptoms without causing side effects.

Ketamine infusion therapy

Serenity Mental Health Centers also offers ketamine infusion therapy to help ease OCD symptoms.

Many people with OCD also have depression and anxiety. With ketamine infusion therapy, the team offers you immediate relief from your depression and anxiety symptoms, allowing for greater success in treating your OCD.

To get control over your OCD, schedule a consultation with Serenity Mental Health Centers by calling the office or requesting an appointment online today.
