Official FDA Approval for TMS Treatment for OCD

Published by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)

On August 16, 2018, the FDA approved Brainsway’s TMS system as a treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). TMS was originally FDA-approved as a treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), but the FDA specified that TMS can be prescribed as a treatment for adult patients struggling with OCD symptoms. The FDA goes on to specify that the TMS machine should not be used to focus magnetic fields on areas outside of the cerebral cortex. They also specify the risks associated with TMS as a treatment for OCD based on patients’ experiences during trials.

As we stated previously on our blog, it’s exciting that TMS is approved as a treatment for OCD because it is an effective option for those who haven’t found relief through traditional treatments. And hopefully, the FDA approval will allow more patients access to this revolutionary treatment.
