The psychiatrists at Serenity Mental Health Centers are committed to helping patients figure out if they are experiencing feelings of anxiety or if they have an anxiety-related disorder. We will work one-on-one with each of our patients to determine if they are experiencing prolonged anxiousness, diagnose what type of anxiety disorder they may have, and the best way to treat the anxiety. Are generalized anxiety disorder and general anxiety the same thing?

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and general anxiety are not the same thing. While general anxiety is a reaction most people will have during stressful or uncertain situations, generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by much more severe worry regarding everyday things. Those who have GAD may worry for no apparent reason and don't know how to stop this cycle.

What can I do if my partner has anxiety?

If your partner has anxiety, the first thing to remember is that anxiety is not something someone can just snap out of. However, armored with the right support, help, and information, your partner may be able to overcome these tendencies. If your partner is suffering with anxiety, a few things you can do include:

  • Reassure them that they will be okay
  • Stay calm and patient
  • Don't make them feel guilty
  • Ask them how you can help them in the moment
Does anxiety run in families?

If you have a family member with generalized anxiety disorder, you may be more likely to develop anxiety yourself. Research supports that genes may play a role; however, it's unclear how the conditions are passed from family member to family member.
